D. Vijayalakshmi - Ulunthankudi Village

I am D. Vijayalakshmi (36) wife of Dharmalingam, belongs to dalit community living in the villages of Ulunthankudi, Trichirapalli district.  I have 2 children, out of marriage that has performed 10 years before. My husband became alcohol dependant and failed to bring income to family needs. We eked out income from agriculture and allied labor works. I learnt thatches making from my father in law as he used to do thatches making during off season to make income.

I found my situation challenging as I have to run family on my own income, though my male breadwinner is here in the family.  That time, I was fortunate to become a member with Vasantham Pengal Sangam. I joined, do small savings and availed internal lending, however that is not enough! I requested VPS to support me with a loan to do thatches making that will fetch me good income to address our income needs.

VPS under RSWR project loaned me an amount of Rs.8300 to invest in thatches making and marketing activities.  I do this near my house and also found time to look after my children and the family needs. I earn Rs.200 per day, and work 22-24 days in a month. I am repaying the loan amount to committee promptly with interest besides savings in the group.

Meanwhile, alcohol dependant spouse attempted suicide and saved from suicide, admitted at Government Hospital, Tiruchirapalli. VPS is engaged in counseling my spouse to give his alcohol, I hope he will release himself !

Thanks to RSWR and VPS for this timely intervention !

Happy to say, that I am one of a member in Mariyamman Self Help Group and hardly involve in small savings as per the group norms monthly Rs. 100.

I have got a small credit INR 5000 from the Revolving Fund of VPS of ACWW and hardly invest from my side Rs. 3300 and buy two pregnant goats in January 2022. In addition to carrying my children, I rear the goats around my home not at far away. I got two baby goats in July 2022. Recently I sold one young goat for INR 5100 and retain three goats. Through this amount I purchased a walker to my elder daughter and settled the credit amount.  Both are using the same walker and they are happy now. I have participated in the various training programs. Specially, I would like o say that I attend got rearing management training and gender perspective training.  “Even though I get small income by goat rearing I can’t able to go beyond it due to my MR children. I spent more  time with my children and really fearing about their future”.

Thanks to ACWW for the income generation support to my family. Hope I will continue the goat rearing.
